THE RESTORATION
OF THE PISA LEANING TOWER:
the state-of-the-art methodology
for the conservation fo the ancient monuments (Florence, Pisa 18th-19th
February 2005)
The
International Conference
is addressed to Young Researchers (with
up to 10 years of experience) and Docent as well,
and held in Florence and Pisa. It starts from the
dissemination of the idea and of the consequent
technology invented on purpose to stabilize and
repair the Pisa Bell Tower and the Mexico City Cathedral,
two extremely important monuments threatened with
danger of collapse by soil settlements since the
very beginning of their construction. Download

The conference provides key-note lectures by
Protagonists
(members of the International Commission for the
Safeguard
of Pisa Bell Tower) who conceived and operated
the
project and other Experts on:
- Cultural Goods and related importance in the
Social Life
- Meaning of the Pisa Bell Tower in the History
of Architecture
and of the Load Bearing Structural Systems
- Soil Mechanics of Pisa, Soil Settlements and

The purposes of the proposed Meeting
are:
- learn how to choose the right technical proposal
to fulfil the requirements (safeguard of the architectural
and historiccharacteristics of the Monument, efficiency,
lasting, security)
- apprentice the mental processes of how to pass
from IDEA to REALIZATION
- adequate the existing technology to the new
tasks
- study the applicability of the new technology
other Locations/Situations/Problems
- forecasting effectiveness of the measure in
the time
- forecasting secondary problems which can arise
and
their handling
- presentation of similar cases in Europe and
first
approach for application of the above mentioned
techniques
Introductory lectures, discussions, applicability
to similar problems, workshops and visits are
the milestones of this conference. Applicants
will be mainly young researchers (with up to 10
years of experience) from European member and
candidate countries with also the participation
of European third countries.

9.00-13.00 speeches of keynotes Speakers:
Preliminary subjects on: Conservation of Monuments,
Historical Research, Interpretation
of the Structural System, Soil characteristics,
Damage Assessment, Monitoring Survey of the
geometrical characteristics as well as of the
structural failures.
14.00-16.00 speeches of keynotes Speakers
Preliminary subjects on: Evaluation of
the actual Tower Stability, Establishing the requirements
for the intervention, Selection of the final solution
for the intervention. Besides, Contractor’s
requirements, Call for Bids, Joint Venture, Administration
etc., given by the Protagonists of the Pisa Tower
Stabilization, Monitoring
17.00-18.00 open discussion and presentation
of particular cases: Preliminary subjects
are: Discussion on similar situations in other
countries, on the possibility of application of
the same technology and the same techniques. Each
speaker will have 15 minutes for the presentation.

9.00-13.00 departure for Pisa visit to the Pisa
Bell Tower and final conclusion of the conference
Participation requirements:
Young researchers who are interested to present
a paper at the conference are requested to
specify:
1. the reasons for their participation and the
subjects they would receive some deepening
(2 keywords)
2. one (or more) related case-study (maximum 2.000
characters on the whole; 3 keywords)
